Burqas have been distributed to primary school girls in Badakhshan as part of their official school uniform, according to local officials.
The Taliban’s education department in Badakhshan distributed the burqas along with school uniforms, in collaboration with domestic NGO Roz Development and Economic Institute, the department said in a statement Sunday.
Around 700 uniforms and 1000 burqas were distributed to four girls’ schools Makhfi Badakhshi, Niswan No. 2, Niswan Bagh-e-Chiragh, and Niswan Al-Jihad, the statement said.
It added that another 500 sets of uniforms and burqas will be distributed to primary school students in the Shohada and Baharak districts.
Roz Development and Economic Institute’s Nazia Baharestani said she is working to provide uniforms and burqa for female students in all schools in the province.
She said that the distribution program aims to assist poor families and orphaned children and encourages students to pursue education at school.
Since seizing power in Afghanistan in August 2021, the Taliban has instituted rules and programs to prescribe specific clothing for women and girls, mostly consisting of long, all-black coverings and burqas.
