{"id":37626,"date":"2026-07-03T18:15:14","date_gmt":"2026-07-03T14:45:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rukhshana.com\/en\/?p=37626"},"modified":"2026-07-03T18:22:44","modified_gmt":"2026-07-03T14:52:44","slug":"mother-appeals-for-release-of-girl-jailed-for-refusing-to-wed-taliban-ally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rukhshana.com\/en\/mother-appeals-for-release-of-girl-jailed-for-refusing-to-wed-taliban-ally\/","title":{"rendered":"Mother appeals for release of\u00a0girl jailed for refusing to wed Taliban\u00a0ally\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Sina Saadi<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The family of an Afghan teenager jailed by&nbsp;the Taliban&nbsp;for five&nbsp;years after refusing to marry an influential&nbsp;tribal&nbsp;figure&nbsp;in his 70s have&nbsp;appealed to the group\u2019s supreme leader&nbsp;for help&nbsp;to secure her release.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Legal documents show that Khudai Nazar, a wealthy Pashtun who is close to the Taliban,&nbsp;first&nbsp;forced Bibi Siddiqa to move into his home&nbsp;five years ago&nbsp;when she was about 12 years old in payment of a 400,000 Afghani ($6,280) debt owed by her father.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two years later,&nbsp;Nazar&nbsp;asked her father to&nbsp;make arrangements&nbsp;for his&nbsp;marriage&nbsp;to Siddiqa.&nbsp;When&nbsp;her father&nbsp;refused, Nazar threatened to kill him,&nbsp;according to&nbsp;a&nbsp;source&nbsp;familiar with the case.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nazar, who already has three wives,&nbsp;continued to&nbsp;hold&nbsp;Siddiqa captive, but&nbsp;she&nbsp;was released&nbsp;after six months&nbsp;and placed under Taliban supervision&nbsp;following mediation by&nbsp;Turkmen&nbsp;tribal elders.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Siddiqa\u2019s&nbsp;family are ethnic Turkmen from Badghis province in northwestern Afghanistan, but her father,&nbsp;Rajab,&nbsp;worked as a labourer for Nazar&nbsp;at his&nbsp;home in&nbsp;Kandahar city&nbsp;in southern Afghanistan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Legal documents obtained by Rukhshana Media&nbsp;show that two Taliban courts in Badghis province reviewed&nbsp;the&nbsp;case with both ruling in&nbsp;Nazar\u2019s favour. However,&nbsp;Siddiqa&nbsp;refused to accept the&nbsp;decision,&nbsp;and she was eventually sentenced to five years in prison.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although&nbsp;Siddiqa&nbsp;was jailed in&nbsp;late 2024,&nbsp;details of the case only&nbsp;emerged&nbsp;recently&nbsp;after&nbsp;her&nbsp;mother&nbsp;sent&nbsp;a video appeal&nbsp;to Afghan media&nbsp;pleading for help.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;family&nbsp;have&nbsp;also&nbsp;sent a legal petition and letter&nbsp;to the office of&nbsp;Taliban Supreme Leader&nbsp;Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada&nbsp;in Kandahar asking&nbsp;him&nbsp;to intervene.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;petition&nbsp;seen by Rukhshana Media&nbsp;said&nbsp;Nazar&nbsp;had tried&nbsp;to rape their daughter&nbsp;on one&nbsp;occasion,&nbsp;but&nbsp;the family\u2019s shouting stopped him.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taliban officials&nbsp;have not commented&nbsp;publicly on the case.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Siddiqa, now 17,&nbsp;was recently transferred from&nbsp;Kandahar prison&nbsp;to a&nbsp;jail&nbsp;in Qala-e-Naw, capital of Badghis province, according to the source who spoke on condition of anonymity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In her&nbsp;video&nbsp;appeal, Siddiqa\u2019s mother&nbsp;Qurban Gul&nbsp;said&nbsp;her daughter\u2019s&nbsp;health had deteriorated, describing&nbsp;her&nbsp;condition&nbsp;as \u201cvery serious\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have nowhere to turn,\u201d she&nbsp;said, speaking in&nbsp;Turkmen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c(My daughter)&nbsp;gets sick every day, and she is not receiving proper medical treatment in prison.&nbsp;Please help us by bringing our case to the attention of the United Nations and human rights&nbsp;organisations.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;source&nbsp;told&nbsp;Rukhshana Media&nbsp;that&nbsp;people in&nbsp;Siddiqa\u2019s home village in Bala Murghab district,&nbsp;near the border with Turkmenistan,&nbsp;were willing&nbsp;to&nbsp;repay&nbsp;her&nbsp;father\u2019s debt.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rukhshana Media has&nbsp;heard<a href=\"https:\/\/rukhshana.com\/en\/go-with-latif-or-go-to-prison-the-afghan-woman-jailed-for-refusing-to-marry\/\">&nbsp;many reports of&nbsp;Taliban members <\/a>forcibly marrying&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rukhshana.com\/en\/an-afghan-child-in-badakhshan-makes-third-attempt-to-end-life-over-forced-marriage\/\">young girls<\/a>&nbsp;since the group seized power in 2021.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Afghanistan has no clear legal minimum age for marriage.\u00a0Earlier this year, the Taliban issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/rukhshana.com\/en\/taliban-legitimising-child-marriage-with-new-edict-activists-warn\/\">decree legalising child marriage<\/a> with the consent of a male relative.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under a traditional practice in&nbsp;Afghanistan&nbsp;called&nbsp;baad,&nbsp;girls are sometimes used to settle&nbsp;disputes and&nbsp;debts, with father\u2019s handing&nbsp;over&nbsp;daughters&nbsp;for marriage or to work as servants.&nbsp;Baad&nbsp;was&nbsp;banned under a 2009 law,&nbsp;which the&nbsp;Taliban&nbsp;has&nbsp;since&nbsp;abolished.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The family of an Afghan teenager jailed by\u00a0the Taliban\u00a0for five\u00a0years after refusing to marry an influential\u00a0tribal\u00a0figure\u00a0in his 70s have\u00a0appealed to the group\u2019s supreme leader\u00a0for help\u00a0to secure her release.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":37627,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_feature_clip_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"jnews-multi-image_gallery":[],"jnews_single_post":{"format":"standard"},"jnews_primary_category":[],"jnews_override_counter":[],"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[966,9581,902,968],"tags":[11549,11551,11550],"class_list":["post-37626","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-featured-en","category-our-work-en","category-reports-en","category-special-coverage-en","tag-girl-jailed","tag-mother-appeals","tag-taliban-ally"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.9 -
