{"id":37650,"date":"2026-07-13T11:44:49","date_gmt":"2026-07-13T08:14:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rukhshana.com\/en\/?p=37650"},"modified":"2026-07-13T11:54:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T08:24:17","slug":"grieving-mother-campaigns-to-save-children-from-landmines-after-losing-sons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rukhshana.com\/en\/grieving-mother-campaigns-to-save-children-from-landmines-after-losing-sons\/","title":{"rendered":"Grieving mother\u00a0campaigns to save\u00a0children\u00a0from landmines\u00a0after losing sons\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Tamana Taban\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One spring day&nbsp;Mah Bibi\u2019s&nbsp;three youngest&nbsp;sons&nbsp;were playing with an&nbsp;unusual&nbsp;object they had found in the ground&nbsp;when it exploded, killing them&nbsp;outright&nbsp;along&nbsp;with three friends.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The six children&nbsp;are among&nbsp;thousands&nbsp;who have been&nbsp;killed&nbsp;or&nbsp;severely&nbsp;injured&nbsp;by&nbsp;landmines and&nbsp;other explosive items&nbsp;left over from&nbsp;decades of conflict&nbsp;in Afghanistan.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seven years on and the pain is still raw,&nbsp;but Mah Bibi*&nbsp;now draws on her&nbsp;family\u2019s loss&nbsp;to save other young lives by&nbsp;spreading&nbsp;awareness&nbsp;of the hidden risks&nbsp;among her community in central Afghanistan.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Afghanistan&nbsp;is one of the&nbsp;most&nbsp;contaminated countries in the world. About 50 people are killed or injured&nbsp;from&nbsp;mines and&nbsp;explosive remnants of war&nbsp;every month, the third highest casualty rate after Myanmar and Syria.&nbsp;Nearly four&nbsp;in five victims are children.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mah Bibi\u2019s sons&nbsp;were&nbsp;playing&nbsp;with their friends&nbsp;beside&nbsp;a road&nbsp;when they spotted a piece of&nbsp;white&nbsp;metal.&nbsp;Curious, they&nbsp;struck it with&nbsp;a&nbsp;sickle.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>On&nbsp;hearing the blast echo through the village,&nbsp;Mah Bibi&nbsp;rushed to the scene.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;All the children had fallen close together, and their blood had stained the ground red,&#8221; she&nbsp;told Rukhshana Media.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Imagine losing three children, all torn to pieces, in a single day. It&#8217;s unbearable.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The youngest&nbsp;was 5 years old, the oldest&nbsp;12.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Afghanistan\u00a0is littered with explosive items\u00a0\u2013 a legacy from\u00a0the Soviet-Afghanistan\u00a0war\u00a0in the 1980s,\u00a0subsequent\u00a0civil conflicts among rival factions, and fighting between the Taliban and\u00a0former\u00a0Afghan\u00a0forces.\u00a0<br><br>\u00a0But\u00a0international\u00a0funding for mine\u00a0action\u00a0in Afghanistan\u00a0has plunged in recent years,\u00a0impacting\u00a0clearance\u00a0operations,\u00a0risk\u00a0education\u00a0programmers\u00a0and\u00a0assistance\u00a0for injured victims.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Children are particularly vulnerable because they often pick up objects while playing outdoors, tending animals or hunting for scrap metal to sell.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mah Bibi, 52,&nbsp;who&nbsp;lives in a&nbsp;mountainous area&nbsp;in the west of&nbsp;Bamiyan&nbsp;Province, says no&nbsp;organisation had ever&nbsp;run an awareness campaign in&nbsp;her village&nbsp;before&nbsp;the tragedy&nbsp;on April 1, 2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/rukhshana.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/07\/Bamiyan2-1024x512.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-37654\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rukhshana.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/07\/Bamiyan2-1024x512.webp 1024w, https:\/\/rukhshana.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/07\/Bamiyan2-300x150.webp 300w, https:\/\/rukhshana.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/07\/Bamiyan2-768x384.webp 768w, https:\/\/rukhshana.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/07\/Bamiyan2.webp 1140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Bamiyan- Rukhshana media <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>As she grieved,\u00a0she\u00a0repeatedly shared\u00a0her heartbreak with her neighbours, sobbing as she\u00a0implored\u00a0them to\u00a0teach\u00a0their\u00a0own\u00a0children never to touch unfamiliar objects\u00a0they find\u00a0in the ground.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gradually, she realised that she had&nbsp;an important&nbsp;role&nbsp;to play&nbsp;in&nbsp;educating&nbsp;other&nbsp;women and children&nbsp;in her&nbsp;community and nearby villages.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Although many years have passed since that day, my children&#8217;s faces are still before my eyes as if&nbsp;it&nbsp;were yesterday, and I can never forget them,\u201d she said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>\u201cI do not want any other mother to lose her child because of&nbsp;a landmine.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DONORS CUT FUNDING&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mah Bibi&nbsp;uses women&#8217;s gatherings,&nbsp;family events,&nbsp;religious ceremonies&nbsp;and even&nbsp;weddings&nbsp;to spread her message.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her voluntary mine education work is a family&nbsp;endeavour.&nbsp;One of her older children scours the internet for information and pictures to print out, while another helps her memorise the details.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She begins&nbsp;each talk&nbsp;with her own story before&nbsp;discussing the&nbsp;different types&nbsp;of&nbsp;deadly&nbsp;ordnance&nbsp;that could&nbsp;lie&nbsp;buried&nbsp;in the ground&nbsp;and sharing photos&nbsp;with her audience.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 1,000 square kilometres of land are still known to be contaminated in Afghanistan, preventing&nbsp;people from farming, collecting wood and&nbsp;water&nbsp;and accessing healthcare and schools.&nbsp;An estimated 3 million people live within a kilometre of this land.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But funding for mine action&nbsp;work in Afghanistan&nbsp;fell&nbsp;to $24 million last year,&nbsp;down&nbsp;from $38.3 million in 2024, according to&nbsp;an expert citing figures from&nbsp;the country\u2019s&nbsp;de facto&nbsp;authorities.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United States, once one of the largest donors, cut all funding for mine action in Afghanistan last year&nbsp;when President Donald Trump\u2019s administration slashed&nbsp;foreign&nbsp;assistance.&nbsp;Other&nbsp;donors have also scaled back.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cuts&nbsp;continue to have&nbsp;a&nbsp;severe impact &#8211; the&nbsp;number of mine action personnel&nbsp;has&nbsp;more than halved since March falling from 1,300 to under 600. This is down from 15,000 personnel in 2011.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mohammad Ali Momeni, a&nbsp;community&nbsp;activist&nbsp;in&nbsp;Bamiyan,&nbsp;said&nbsp;voluntary initiatives like Mah Bibi&#8217;s&nbsp;were&nbsp;crucial for&nbsp;protecting&nbsp;people&nbsp;across&nbsp;the country.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today,&nbsp;Mah Bibi&nbsp;is seen as a local hero in her community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She&nbsp;believes her mine awareness work has saved many lives.
