Last\u00a0month,\u00a0mother-of-two\u00a0Shakila\u00a0set\u00a0off\u00a0from\u00a0her\u00a0village\u00a0in\u00a0central\u00a0Afghanistan\u00a0for the\u00a030-minute\u00a0trip\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0local\u00a0courthouse\u00a0to\u00a0collect\u00a0the\u00a0ruling\u00a0in her\u00a0divorce\u00a0case.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But Shakila never made it there; she was ambushed en route and shot dead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A relative told Rukhshana Media the gunman was Shakila\u2019s husband who had recently returned from the United States where he had been living. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Halfway there, (he) was hiding behind a rock. He fired three bullets into Shakila\u2019s right eye,” said the relative, who asked to remain anonymous. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The shooting was witnessed by Shakila’s brother who was accompanying her to the courthouse, the source said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Photos sent to Rukhshana Media show Shakila\u2019s body lying in the road following\u00a0her murder\u00a0on August 26,\u00a0and close-ups of her injuries.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police arrested the husband shortly afterwards and he remains in detention, according to the source. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rukhshana Media was unable to speak to local Taliban officials or the husband’s family. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shakila, 27, had been married for nine years and had two sons aged five and seven. But earlier this year she filed for divorce at the Taliban court in Miramor district in Daykundi province, saying her husband had beaten her and threatened her with a gun. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her relative said the husband’s family had also repeatedly threatened to kill Shakila and members of her family. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In her divorce petition, seen by Rukhshana Media, Shakila said: “(My husband) returned from America after several years … He threatened me with a gun and hit me all over my body.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shakila stated she was seeking the return of her personal belongings from her husband\u2019s family and $12,000 in payment of her mahr – a gift that a man makes or promises to his bride as part of their marriage contract in Islamic law. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her\u00a0relative said\u00a0Shakila\u00a0had gone to court the day before\u00a0her murder,\u00a0expecting the divorce to be settled then.\u00a0However,\u00a0her father-in-law had\u00a0requested another\u00a0day to consult others on the matter, which the court had agreed to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
