{"id":37830,"date":"2026-10-09T11:42:44","date_gmt":"2026-10-09T08:12:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rukhshana.com\/en\/?p=37830"},"modified":"2026-10-09T11:42:45","modified_gmt":"2026-10-09T08:12:45","slug":"meet-nasiba-daytabar-the-afghan-woman-who-rose-from-poverty-to-run-for-parliament-in-sweden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rukhshana.com\/en\/meet-nasiba-daytabar-the-afghan-woman-who-rose-from-poverty-to-run-for-parliament-in-sweden\/","title":{"rendered":"\u00a0\u00a0Meet Nasiba Daytabar: The Afghan woman who rose from poverty to run for parliament in Sweden\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Azada Tran<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like many Afghan girls, Nasiba Daytabar spent her teenage years terrified her father would pull her out of school and marry her off \u2013 education in his view was wasted on girls.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But today Daytabar, 44, has a master\u2019s degree in human rights and recently ran for parliament in her adopted homeland of Sweden.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A&nbsp;prominent <a href=\"https:\/\/nasiba%20daytabar%20%7C%20green%20party\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">member of Sweden&#8217;s centre-left Green Party,<\/a> Daytabar is a passionate advocate for migrant rights and highly respected among the country&#8217;s sizable Afghan diaspora.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although&nbsp;she&nbsp;did not win a seat in the&nbsp;September 13 general election, her nomination to stand&nbsp;is remarkable for the deep poverty and severe discrimination she has&nbsp;overcome.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Daytabar&nbsp;was born in the Iranian capital Tehran in 1982 after her family migrated from Daikundi province in central Afghanistan. Her father was an agricultural labourer and money was scarce.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;When I was in primary school, my father would cut a pencil in half, and each half had to last me a month,\u201d she told Rukhshana Media. \u201cThe pencil would become so small that I couldn\u2019t even hold it between my fingers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;In winter, I had no socks. I went to school in fabric shoes that became completely soaked with melted snow, leaving my feet freezing. But I carried on. My only concern then was learning.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most&nbsp;Afghan migrant children in Iran lack residency documents and struggle to access education. Daytabar\u2019s&nbsp;mother battled with the authorities to get her a school place, but her father never saw the point.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I spent my school years under so much stress and fear. At any moment, I thought my father might stop me going to school,&#8221; Daytabar said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;He&nbsp;used to say that a girl shouldn\u2019t go to school. A girl has to get married.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Daytabar was 14 her father ordered her to quit school and marry a cousin. When she refused, he beat her.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With her mother\u2019s support, Daytabar&nbsp;finished school and eventually secured&nbsp;a scholarship to study political science at the University of Tehran. But when she arrived there, she discovered&nbsp;she had to pay a small&nbsp;fee&nbsp;towards basic expenses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI didn\u2019t know what to do,\u201d she said. \u201cMy father neither had that sort of money nor would he have given it to me \u2026 I cried and cried.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She sold&nbsp;her computer and earrings to pay for the first term, later obtaining financial support from a scholarship programme run by the U.N. refugee agency.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A NEW LIFE&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After graduating in 2009, Daytabar&nbsp;wanted to&nbsp;go to Afghanistan where opportunities were growing for women.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>But her father opposed the idea and arranged for her to marry an Afghan man with Swedish citizenship.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She did not know a word of Swedish when she moved to her new home in 2010, but she immediately felt a huge sense of freedom \u2013 a release from the&nbsp;discrimination that had for so long trammelled her life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The fact I had the same rights as other Swedish citizens was remarkable to me,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"571\" src=\"https:\/\/rukhshana.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/10\/PMS-7.jpg-1024x571.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-37832\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rukhshana.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/10\/PMS-7.jpg-1024x571.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/rukhshana.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/10\/PMS-7.jpg-300x167.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/rukhshana.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/10\/PMS-7.jpg-767x428.jpeg 767w, https:\/\/rukhshana.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/10\/PMS-7.jpg-1536x857.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/rukhshana.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/10\/PMS-7.jpg-2048x1142.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image: Nasiba Daytabar\/ supplied.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019d spent my whole life in Iran, labelled &#8216;Afghan&#8217;, without any rights. But here, I could study and work without discrimination. There were also no longer any restrictions hanging over me, telling me that, as a woman, I had no right to do something.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sweden gave her the chance to&nbsp;build a new life, she says. She learnt the language, went back to university and joined the Green Party, where she now sits on the gender equality and diversity committee. &nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>She works at Stockholm City Council,&nbsp;training&nbsp;staff&nbsp;how to support girls and women facing&nbsp;\u201chonour\u201d abuse \u2013 violent and coercive behaviour perpetrated by families&nbsp;in the name of protecting their \u201chonour\u201d. Issues she deals with&nbsp;include&nbsp;child marriage and forced marriage. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Daytabar&nbsp;is also an elected member of&nbsp;the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mp.se\/jarfalla\/vara-politiker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">municipal council in J\u00e4rf\u00e4lla,<\/a> the northern suburb of Stockholm where she lives with her husband, a building engineer, and two children.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She&nbsp;is keeping an open mind about&nbsp;her future, but&nbsp;says she may&nbsp;stand&nbsp;in the European Parliament elections in 2029. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her&nbsp;motivation in running for Sweden\u2019s parliament was partly to give a stronger voice to the country\u2019s migrants.
