{"id":4011,"date":"2021-10-14T02:29:36","date_gmt":"2021-10-13T21:59:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rukhshana.com\/?p=4011"},"modified":"2021-10-14T02:29:40","modified_gmt":"2021-10-13T21:59:40","slug":"i-will-continue-teaching-for-as-long-as-i-am-alive-one-afghan-school-teachers-promise-to-her-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rukhshana.com\/en\/i-will-continue-teaching-for-as-long-as-i-am-alive-one-afghan-school-teachers-promise-to-her-students\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cI will continue teaching for as long as I am alive\u201d: one Afghan school teacher\u2019s promise to her students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">By Kobra Nader&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Taliban have allowed teenage girls back to school in some parts of Afghanistan, but for mathematics teacher Masuma Mohseni, her classes are not the same.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 33-year-old teacher struggles to keep her two young daughters and students motivated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy students are scared too,\u201d Mohseni told Rukhshana Media. \u201cWhen the Taliban came to our school for a discussion one day, eight students fainted out of fear,\u201d she said from Balkh province in the country\u2019s north, where she lives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the Taliban took over the province on August 14, it closed all schools, both for boys and girls. In Balkh, schools reopened for both two weeks later.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Kabul and most other parts of the country, girls\u2019 secondary schools are still closed by Taliban order.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The students are not the only ones afraid of the Taliban. When the female teachers returned to school, they wore different clothes &#8212; the long, black dresses that cover the woman\u2019s entire body but her face and hands. When Mohseni asked a Taliban soldier if her dress was Islamic, he responded: \u201cIt\u2019s better if you cover your face as well,\u201d she quoted him as saying.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy 7-year-old daughter is afraid of the Taliban,\u201d Mohseni said in a telephone interview. \u201cWhen she goes to school, she asks me whether her hair is covered enough to avoid being beaten by the Taliban.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mohseni has not been paid for three months, and the lack of salary has forced some teachers to quit. \u201cSome of the teachers do not have the taxi fare to come to the school,\u201d she lamented.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the Taliban captured Kabul in its previous rule, in 1996, Mohseni was a third grade student in the eastern province of Ghazni. She continued her schooling until sixth grade, but could not go to secondary school due to a \u201ctemporary\u201d ban the Taliban imposed &#8212; much like the current restrictions the group has ordered.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mohseni has assured her students she will continue working, no matter what troubles she faces. &#8220;I told my students, \u2018I will continue teaching for as long as I am alive\u2019\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Afghan TV network <a href=\"https:\/\/tolonews.com\/afghanistan-174966\">Tolonews<\/a> on October 9, reported that girls\u2019 schools in<strong> <\/strong>Balkh, Sar-e-Pul and Kunduz provinces have reopened.
