{"id":5067,"date":"2021-12-09T02:11:37","date_gmt":"2021-12-08T21:41:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rukhshana.com\/?p=5067"},"modified":"2021-12-09T02:11:40","modified_gmt":"2021-12-08T21:41:40","slug":"afghan-women-protest-wearing-shrouds-we-are-dying-but-the-world-is-silent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rukhshana.com\/en\/afghan-women-protest-wearing-shrouds-we-are-dying-but-the-world-is-silent\/","title":{"rendered":"Afghan women protest wearing shrouds: \u201cWe are dying but the world is silent\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Rukhshana Media&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A group of women protested in the Afghan capital on Tuesday, wearing funeral shrouds to illustrate their wretched lives under the Taliban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The protest took place in an indoor space, but the local media were not invited as the protesters feared such an invitation would alert the Taliban, one of the organizers told Rukhshana Media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the Taliban have suppressed women\u2019s protests on several occasions and have beaten journalists who covered them, many women protesters have been forced indoors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But finding a venue is not easy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo one was willing to give us a place, [but] finally one of our members offered her workplace as the venue,\u201d said Sudaba Kabiri, one of the organizers of the protest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We wore a shroud to say that Afghan women are dying, but the world is silent,&#8221; Kabiri said in a phone interview on Wednesday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The protest was organized by a group called the \u201cSpontaneous Movement of Afghan Women Fighters\u201d and protesters wore white shrouds and tri-colour headscarves in the green, red and black of the Afghan flag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This time we wanted to protest differently by wearing a shroud because the aspiration and goal of a nation [for the future] are dying,\u201d said Zakia Jamshidpour, one of the participants. \u201cWomen can not study, work and express themselves freely. The Taliban have deprived Afghan women of their human rights,\u201d she told Rukhshana Media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The spell of silence must be broken in the face of oppression,\u201d Jamshidpour added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Saturday a press conference planned by the Spontaneous Movement of Afghan Women Fighters in response to the Taliban\u2019s first decree on women\u2019s rights was cancelled when the Taliban reportedly threatened the librarian of the library they chose as venue, according to conference organizers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Taliban leader issued the group&#8217;s first decree on women&#8217;s rights on Friday, which banned forced marriage but made no mention of a woman\u2019s right to education and work, two crucial demands at the heart of women\u2019s protests in the country.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Rukhshana Media&nbsp; A group of women protested in the Afghan capital on Tuesday, wearing funeral shrouds to illustrate their wretched lives under the Taliban.
