A midwife was mysteriously murdered in northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif on Friday. The midwife identified as Nafisa Balkhi received a call from her office and left the house with a 4-year-old child, said her cousin, Mahsa Mazari.
Mazari claimed Balkhi was killed by the Taliban at a checkpoint in police district 7th of Mazar-e-Sharif, and the child was left abandoned in the city.
The child was found from a local mosque.
The family received a call from Mazar-e-Sharif regional hospital on Saturday morning to pick up their daughter’s body. Balkhi was also a medical student at a private university in Mazar-e-Sharif.
The Taliban have not yet commented on the incident.
Mazar-e-Sharif, a relatively liberal city of a million in the northern Afghanistan, has witnessed similar executions of women since the Taliban takeover.
The bodies of two female students were found in the city just three weeks ago.
