A woman died while she was swimming in the Helmand river in Gereshk district of southern Helmand province on Sunday, July 24, a Taliban local official said.
Hafiz Rashid Helmandi, the Taliban’s director of Information and Culture for Helmand province, said that three women were swimming in the river, two guests from Kandahar and one host from Helmand.
He said the host lady invited the two guests to swim in the river near her home. But she herself drowned and the guests survived.
In Afghanistan, it is extremely rare for women to drown because very few of them can swim due to cultural restrictions.
