Members of the Afghan Women’s Movement for Justice and Freedom said no one was willing to give them a place to celebrate International Women’s Day.
A member of the movement said they have been trying to find a place to celebrate the 8th of March in the past two weeks, but no one provided them a venue, fearing the Taliban.
She said that they asked educational centers, restaurants, and wedding halls to host their event. But the owners of those places refused to host Women’s day event, saying the Taliban warned them not to do so.
These Afghan women celebrated International Women’s Day in a house because they couldn’t find any other place.
“We wanted to celebrate Women’s International Day far bigger;” the statement sent to Rukhshana media reads. “But unfortunately, there are many restrictions imposed that no one was willing to give us a place to celebrate this day.”
“This year, we, the women of Afghanistan, welcome March 8 in a situation where we are deprived of our very basic human rights,” the statement added.
“Our message to all Afghan women is to fight for justice, gender equality, and human rights,” the statement said.
