Dozens of women staged a protest in Kabul on Saturday, 26th March against the Taliban’s ban on girls’ education, demanding the immediate reopening of schools for girls above sixth grade.
The protesters, including schoolgirls and female teachers, walked in the streets, chanted “we want education,” “break the silence,” and “raise your voice” outside the Taliban’s education ministry.
“Education is our undeniable right,” read a sign held by teenage schoolgirls in a video of the protest sent to Rukhshana Media.
Shahla Arefi, one of the protesters, said the goal of the protest is to pressure the Taliban to lift the ban on girls’ education which is their basic right.
She said between 30-40 women took part in the protest in Kabul, and the Taliban violently attacked the protesters, and pointing gun at some journalists who came to cover the rally.
A similar female protest was held in western Herat province. But it ended soon after the Taliban promised the reopening of schools for all girls.
