A pregnant woman, who fell into a deep well on Tuesday evening in Khakriz district of southern Kandahar province, was pronounced dead.
Janan Agha, a local Taliban official in Kandahar, said they were working to pull her body out of the well late tonight or tomorrow morning.
“The woman couldn’t be rescued,” he said, “she died in the well.”
Naimatullah Seraji, the Taliban’s director of Public Works for Kandahar, said earlier that a technical team was dispatched to the scene and that efforts were underway to rescue the pregnant woman.
Saeed Jan, a resident of Khakriz, said it wasn’t clear how and why she fell into the well. An unverified video of the incident obtained by Rukshana Media shows a group of men trying to communicate with someone in a well.
There have been several reports of children falling into wells in some southern provinces in the past few months. Such incidents often happen in Afghanistan because some wells are left open and uncovered.
