After imposing severe restrictions on women’s life in Herat, several restaurant owners in the city have installed hijab posters inside their restaurants and created separate booths for families to accept the Taliban’s mandatory hijab and gender segregation plan.
fifty-fifty and Herat Serina restaurants are among those who have separated their customers by building separate booths inside the halls, installing hijab posters and banners, and brown curtains around the dining tables.
The banner shows a woman wearing a black veil and reads, “Please observe hijab.”
Herat citizens say there is no need for such initiatives inside an environment where women and families gather.
“They ruined the 50-50 restaurant’s vibe,” a female student studying at Herat University tells Rukhshana Media on condition of anonymity. “I don’t like it at all, they caged the family lodges.”
The Taliban in Herat province had previously proposed a gender segregation plan, according to which restaurants and cafes had separate entrances for men and women.
