A 21-year-old woman protester committed suicide by throwing herself into a well in northern Kunduz province, local sources in the province confirmed to Rukhshana Media.
Dr. Zahra Mohammadi, head of the Afghan Women’s Unity and Solidarity Movement, also confirmed to Rukhshana Media that she was a member of her movement in Kunduz province.
Local sources said that she was arrested for two days and tortured by the Taliban at the beginning of their rule after seizing power in August 2021.
A woman protester Palwasha*, who lives in her neighborhood, said that the victim named Bibi Gul and was a resident of the fifth district of Kunduz provincial capital.
She said the incident happened on Friday, December 29.
Palwasha added that she was in a coma for 24 hours. On Saturday night, her family members transferred her body from the regional hospital in the province and buried her the next day, she said.
Bibi Gul graduated high school in 2021 and could not participate in the university entrance exam because the Taliban barred women from participating in the exam, according to Palwasha.
She said that after the Taliban imposed restrictions on women, dozens of girls and women including herself and Bibi Gul, staged street protests. Several of us, including me and Bibi Gul were arrested and detained by the Taliban for two days, she said.
“They tortured us for two days and asked which foreign country ordered to demonstrate against the Islamic Emirate,” she said. “They checked our phones and when they couldn’t find anything, they released us.”
According to Palwasha, after they were released from prison, their families imposed many restrictions and did not allow them to leave their houses.
Despite the restrictions, she said Bibi Gul participated in indoor protests against the Taliban.
Another local source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, also told Rukhshana Media that Bibi Gul’s family had imposed many restrictions on her at home.
Bibi Gul’s family members are reluctant to talk to the media in connection to the incident, local sources told Rukhshana Media.
Allegedly after the fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban suicides and murders of women and girls have increased in some provinces of the country.
