A consortium of international human rights organizations has been formed to monitor the situation of human rights in Afghanistan. The goal of the alliance is to “advocate for the protection of human rights and accountability for all violations and abuses” and “pressure the Taliban to respect human rights” and hold the group “accountable,” according to a joint statement the group posted on Amnesty International website.
Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and several other international rights organizations are members of the consortium.
The new alliance said the situation of human rights has deteriorated dramatically since Taliban took power last year.
“The fighting in the country has ended but serious human rights violations continue unabated,” the statement said.
“The Taliban have committed and continue to commit widespread human rights violations including extrajudicial executions, enforced disappearances, torture, arbitrary detentions, a massive rollback of the rights of women and girls, censorship of and attacks against the media,” the statement added.
The alliance members cooperate in research, raising awareness, and documenting and reporting on human rights violations in Afghanistan.
“There has never been a greater need for human rights organizations across the world to unite and demand accountability and justice for the people of Afghanistan,” said Samira Hamidi, Regional Campaigner, of the Amnesty International. “People in Afghanistan are caught between the Taliban abuses and a humanitarian disaster, and the international community can and should do more to protect them.”
