Alia Azizi, a female police officer who worked as the manager of Herat’s prison under the previous government, disappeared soon after the Taliban’s return to power last year.
She is still missing.
Mohammad Zia, Azizi’s husband, said he has gone to different departments in Herat and Kabul, looking for his wife but no one in the new government of Taliban is willing to cooperate.
He said the family still don’t know about Azizi’s whereabouts.
Zia said the Taliban haven’t even told him if his wife was alive. He called on the international community, human rights organizations, and the United Nations to pressure the Taliban and help him find his wife.
Rohullah, Azizi’s son, said the entire family is under severe psychological pressure. He said his father, Zia, has heart disease, and he suffered a stroke recently.
The younger son of the family keeps calling for his “mother” in sleep every night.
The Taliban’s governor in Herat told the family that Azizi has left Afghanistan, and she is now living abroad, without providing any evidence to support his claim.
It was unclear who was behind Azizi’s disappearance.
Sky News reported last October she had received a phone call from Nabi Khalil, the director-general of the Taliban’s prison in Herat, and he had asked her to return to work before she went missing.
International rights organizations urge the Taliban to “investigate” the incident.
