Rukhshana Media and its editor-in-chief, Zahra Joya, won the Foreign Press 2022 award from the Foreign Press Correspondents Association and Club U.S.
“Free media in Afghanistan is in serious danger. Without a free media, Afghanistan would be a country like North Korea,” Ms. Joya said during her award acceptance speech.
Rukhshana Media also won the Llibertat d’Expressio 2022 award, presented by the Union of Journalists of the Spanish city of Valencia.
Ms. Joya founded Rukhshana Media in 2019 to focus on Afghan women’s stories. She was among Time Magazine’s women of the year in 2022.
Rukhshana Media also won the Marie Colvin Award and the Nieman Foundation journalism awards.
