The Afghanistan Journalists Centre (AfJC) has jointly awarded five journalists its highest honor of Journalist of the Year for 2024, including a former reporter for Rukhshana Media.
Tahir Ahmadi was one of the five recipients of the award announced Friday at a ceremony in Belgium’s capital, Brussles. His report published by Rukhshana Media on the challenges faced by Afghan migrants in Pakistan was recognized by the judging panel as one of the best reports of the year.
Mr Ahmadi has also covered under a pseudonym, numerous stories in Afghanistan at great personal risk on human rights violations, women’s and children’s rights, and the migration from Afghanistan since the Taliban returned to power.
His work with Rukhshana Media ended after he migrated out of Afghanistan himself.
The other four recipients honored for their work are ToloNews reporters Mitra Majeedy, Nasir Ahmad Salehi, and Farid Mohammadi, and the editor of Hasht-e Subh Daily Amin Kawah.
Mitra Majeedy’s report on the plight of child laborers in Kabul was especially noted.
The Afghanistan Journalist of the Year has been awarded by the AfJC annually since 2014 with both local and international media outlets able to nominate journalists for the award.
The AfJC tracks and publishes reports on the situation of journalists, media, and media operations in Afghanistan.
Due to restrictions on the media since the Taliban takeover of the country, the organization now conducts many of its programs outside Afghanistan.
