Scores of worshippers were killed and wounded in an attack on a Shia Mosque in northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif on Thursday, local sources said. The attack carried out by a suicide bomber happened during the noon prayer at 12:30 pm, targeting Say-Dukana Mosque.
One source who was inside the mosque when the attack happened said nearly 100 worshippers were killed and wounded.
Another source who was lightly wounded in the attack said the number of dead and wounded could be as high as 80. Both spoke on the condition of anonymity for security reasons.
Etilaat Roz newspaper reported the death of 37 and the injury of 60 worshippers, 14 of whom were in critical condition. A video circulating on social media shows about a dozen dead bodies were strewn around on the mosque floor.
The mosque which came under attack is one of the largest religious Shia and ethnic Hazara mosques in Balkh province.
Meanwhile, smaller blasts happened in Kunduz, Nangarhar and Kabul provinces on Friday. Three were killed and 11 injured in Kunduz, and four Taliban fighters were killed and one wounded in Nangarhar. No information was available about the Kabul blast.
The mosque attack in Mazar-e-Sharif comes two days after the deadly explosions in Kabul, which left dozens of schoolchildren killed and wounded.
