Fifty people including 10 women have been publicly whipped as corporeal punishment for alleged crimes in Afghanistan over two weeks, according to the Taliban Supreme Court.
Documents published by the court show the following:
On February 20, two men and two women received between 38 and 39 lashes in Shakardara district of Kabul. They had been charged with sex outside of marriage and running away from home. All four have also been sentenced to prison terms ranging from six to 18 months.
On February 18, six people including one woman were sentenced to 39 lashes each and imprisoned for between six to 18 months on charges of running away from home, murder, and sodomy in Faryab and Khost provinces.
On February 17, nine people including three women in Ghazni and Takhar provinces received between 30 and 39 lashes for various offenses, including robbery, kidnapping, running away from home, sex outside of marriage, and sodomy. These individuals have also been sentenced to prison ranging from six months to five years.
On February 16, a woman in Bamiyan’s Yakawlang district was given 39 lashes for running away from home. While in Zaranj, the capital of Nimruz province, 11 people received between 20 and 39 lashes for offenses including robbery and sex outside of marriage. They were also sentenced to prison terms ranging from one to six years.
On February 13, five people including a woman received 39 lashes and prison terms of six to 18 months for charges of sex outside of marriage, robbery, and sodomy in Takhar province.
On February 12, a woman received 20 lashes and was sentenced to one year in prison in Muqur district of Ghazni on charges of committing adultery.
On February 6, 13 people including a woman received 39 lashes each and were imprisoned for seven months to two years on various charges in Kabul, Kapisa, and Uruzgan provinces.
The Taliban have publicly whipped hundreds of individuals across Afghanistan since taking power in 2021.
