A pregnant woman fell into a deep well in Khakriz district of southern Kandahar province on Tuesday evening, June 7, local sources said.
Naimatullah Seraji, the Taliban’s director of Public Works for Kandahar, said a technical team was dispatched to the scene last night and that efforts were underway to rescue the woman.
Seraji added both the woman and the child are believed to be still alive.
Saeed Jan, a resident of Khakriz, said it wasn’t clear how and why she fell into the well. An unverified video of the incident obtained by Rukshana Media shows a group of men trying to communicate with someone in a well.
There have been several reports of children falling into wells in some southern provinces in the past few months. Such incidents often happen in Afghanistan because most wells are left open and uncovered.
