The Islamic Republic of Iran’s government announced that 20 women from Afghanistan are held in the country’s prisons as prisoners.
Ghulam Ali Mohammadi, the director of Iran’s Prisons Agency, said 95 percent of foreign national prisoners in his country are the citizens of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq, Seda Va Sima, a state-owned news agency reported on Monday, August 29.
Mohammadi said 20 Afghan women were in Iran’s prisons, but he didn’t provide further details on the number of Afghan men being held captive there.
The foreign prisoners, according to Mohammadi, were detained for committing various crimes such drug trafficking, robbery, theft, crimes against individuals, and the illegal entry to Iran.
