Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, announced the ban on Sunday. He said women, who don’t have male companions, cannot travel abroad without having a strong legal excuse.
“Women cannot travel abroad alone without legal excuse,” Bakhtar, a state-owned news agency, quoted Mujahid.
He didn’t clarify what includes “legal excuses.”
Taliban had also banned women from traveling more than 78 kilometers without a male escort.
They also asked women to wear proper hijab, which, according to them, is a long dress that covers head to toe.
The latest travel ban for women comes at a time when women activists and journalists are trying to leave Afghanistan.
Taliban forces have started a large-scale house-to-house campaign in Kabul city and some northern provinces. They say the goal is combat crimes.
But local residents complain about search operations, calling it abuse of power and invasion of privacy.
Mujahid told a news conference today in Kabul that the Taliban will stop all those who travel outside without any excuse.
“Afghan refugees in foreign countries are currently in a bad situation and the Islamic Emirate does not want other Afghans to face the same fate,” he said.
