The Taliban’s ministry of higher education has banned female students from registering in private higher education institutions or sitting any entrance exams, according to a letter sent to private universities and higher education institutions in Afghanistan.
The letter, seen by Rukhshana Media in Persian language, is dated Sunday January 28. It says female students are not allowed to register for university tests or Kankor entrance exam in private universities and higher institutions for the academic solar year 1402 (Gregorian calendar 2023). It includes post-graduate study.
The letter further warns that “legal action will be taken against the offender.”
The decree has been issued just as student enrolments for academic year 1402 are about to start.
The Taliban has already banned girls from attending public and private universities, schools, and educational centers.
That was followed by a ban on women working at domestic and foreign NGOs.
The move sparked protests, mostly of women, in Kabul, Herat, and Takhar provinces, they were aggressively dispersed by the Taliban using water cannons and threatening to kill them.
