The Taliban have shut down all public and private medical institutes for women across the country, according to local sources.
The Taliban’s acting Minister of Public Health Mawlawi Noor Jalal Jalali communicated the directive during a meeting with the heads of medical institutes in Kabul, the sources reported.
A source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that Mr Jalali instructed that all female students are prohibited from attending their classes until “further notice.”
Samira*, a nursing student at one of Kabul’s medical institutes, confirmed that students have been informed not to attend classes until further notice.
She added that the institute’s administration has announced that all classes are suspended until further notice.
In a WhatsApp voice message, one of the heads of the institutes warned the female students that Taliban intelligence is monitoring the institutes, and if students are found attending their classes, the institute would be sealed.
Since the Taliban’s takeover of the country in August 2021, women have been prohibited from receiving secondary and higher education.
