Herat’s department of Information and Culture has sent a letter to all advertising and printing companies not to publish the images of all living things including humans and animals on billboards across the city.
Rukhshana Media obtained a copy of the letter and the owners of printing businesses in Herat confirmed they have also received a similar letter from the Taliban.
“The Taliban sent official letters to all printing companies two days ago,” said the owner of a printing shop in Herat, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “It says we don’t have the right to print photos (on billboards) and if we violate the order, we will be dealt with.”
He said the Taliban tore down and spray-painted human faces from some billboards in the city.
In another letter sent to Herat’s municipality, the Taliban’s department of Information and Culture writes it has received a verbal order from Kabul that the “publication of living photos is against the policy of Islamic Emirate.”
The latest ban will likely affect the printing and advertising businesses negatively which are already struggling due to economic recession in Herat.
