Farida and her cousin jumped into the river to flee the Taliban, killing themselves in Badakhshan province, her family said.
But a source, who is a relative, said the victims didn’t commit suicide, and that the incident, which happened on Wednesday, August 24, was an honor killing.
Farida’s family killed her and her cousin, who was her lover, then dumped their bodies into the river, according to the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Farida’s sister, who also spoke on the condition that we don’t use her name, said Farida and their young cousin jumped into the Kokcha river to flee the Taliban who fired more than 20 shots at them when they saw them walking together.
She said Farida was happily engaged to another man.
Farida had a verbal argument with her fiance, and the next day she went out with her cousin. Then her fiance saw them both together and rushed to inform her father. By the time her father and fiance arrived, Farida and her cousin, both had jumped into the river. This is what happened according to Farida’s sister.
But the source said Farida and her cousin loved each other, and that Farida’s family is hiding the truth. She added that initially many thought both had committed suicide because they couldn’t marry each other.
“But that wasn’t the case,” she said, “They were first executed by the woman’s family, then their bodies were dumped into the river to cover-up.”
