Teenage girls have been allowed back to school in the southeastern province of Zabul, a Taliban spokesman said on Tuesday.
“Schools for girls and boys up to grade 12 are open in Zabul province,” tweeted the group’s Qatar-based spokesperson, Naeem Wardak.
On September 17, just over a month since the Taliban’s lightning takeover of Afghanistan, the group effectively banned girls from secondary schools when it ordered teenage boys to return to schools, but made no mention of girls.
Earlier this month the Taliban allowed secondary schools in the western province of Herat to readmit girls, but ten days later issued a decree barring them from taking the annual school exam.
