The number of Afghans experiencing severe hunger has increased from 14 million in July 2021 to 23 million in March 2022, seven months after the Taliban takeover, the United Nations deputy special representative for Afghanistan, Ramiz Alakbarov, said in a statement.
“People in Afghanistan are today facing a food insecurity and malnutrition crisis of unparalleled proportions,” he said in a statement, released Tuesday.
The hunger crisis has forced Afghans to “resort to desperate measures such as skipping meals or taking on unprecedented debt to ensure there is some food on the table at the end of the day.”
The statement adds that 95 percent of the country’s population do not have enough to eat. The percentage is almost 100 for the families with female breadwinners.
“It is a figure so high that it is almost inconceivable. Yet, devastatingly, it is the harsh reality,” he said.
Alakbarov said 3.5 million children are in need of nutrition treatment support.
