The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said in a report released on Tuesday, July 20, that it has recorded 2106 civilian casualties in Afghanistan between August 15, 2021 and June 15, 2020.
Of 2106 casualties, 700 were deaths, and 1406 were injuries, the report said.
Among these casualties 88 were women including 37 killed and 51 wounded, and 441 children including 159 killed and 282 wounded.
The majority of civilian casualties were attributed to ISIS-K terror group, the report said, with most victims believed to be Shia Hazaras and Sunni Sufi, two religious minorities in the country.
The Taliban have also carried out 237 extrajudicial killings between August 15, 2021 and June 15, 2022, according to the report.
Among those summarily executed by the Taliban were 160 members of the former government’s security forces, 59 suspected ISIS-K militants, and 18 accused of being affiliated with the national resistance front, known as NRF.
UNAMA has also documented 173 cases of violence against journalists and media workers. The Taliban were behind 163 of these violations. Six journalists were killed during this period, five of them by ISIS-K terror group.
