A group of civil activists and women’s rights defenders staged a protest in Kabul in response to the dissolution of the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and the closure of girls’ secondary schools.
The protesters demanded recognition of women’s rights to work and education and the preservation of their achievements.
They carried slogans such as “elimination of women = elimination of human beings”, “Afghan women, the symbol of the Land”, “We are all together, we defeated oppression” and so on.
Zahra Mohammadi, one of the protesters, told Rukhshana media that the march was organized by members of the “Afghan Women’s Political Participation Network”.
The protesters marched to the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, which is now replaced by the Ministry of Virtue and Vice.
“The protests will continue until the reactivation of the women’s ministry and the reopening of girls’ secondary schools,” Mohammadi said.
She emphasized that women demand an end to gender discrimination.
The protest is taking place as the Taliban removed the Ministry of Women’s Affairs from their cabinet. Also, in a statement, the Taliban ordered the resumption of secondary schools for boys, allowing male teachers and students to return to school. However, the statement did not mention girls and female teachers.
