The Taliban publicly flogged 27 people, including two women, accused of robbery, adultery, sodomy, and running away from home in Helmand and Zabul provinces on Wednesday, December 14, and sentenced them to one month to three years imprisonment.
A source in Zabul province, who spoke on condition of anonymity, tells Rukhshana Media that five people, including two women, were lashed at a high school in the province and then sentenced to imprisonment.
Meanwhile, Hemad Niazi, the Taliban head of Information and Culture in Zabul province, told reporters on Wednesday that a married woman who had got married to another man was lashed 20 times and sentenced to one-year imprisonment and another woman who was accused of having sex out of marriage was lashed 40 times and sentenced to three years imprisonment.
Mr. said that a man who had stolen a motorcycle was lashed 20 times and sentenced to two months imprisonment, two others accused of sodomy were lashed 30 times and sentenced to two years imprisonment, a man accused of adultery was lashed 10 times and sentenced to one-month imprisonment, and another man accused of getting married to a married woman was lashed 39 times and sentenced to three years imprisonment.
Moreover, 20 men accused of adultery and robbery were lashed 35 to 39 times at a stadium in Laskargah, the capital city of Helmand province on Wednesday, December 14, according to Mawlawi Qasim Reyaz, the Taliban’s head of Information and Culture of the province.
The Taliban carried out the death penalty of a man convicted of murder last week in the country’s first public execution since they regained power in mid-August last year.
The public floggings have intensified after Mawlawi Hebatullah Akhundzada, the Taliban supreme leader, ordered the implementation of full enforcement of Islamic Sharia law last month.
