A woman whose ears and nose have been cut off by her husband in an attack at home is being treated in a district hospital in Helmand province, a local source has told Rukhshana Media.
The source said the attack happened after the daughter of the couple ran away from their home in Helmand’s Oyagzai area of Grishk district.
The source did not provide further details about the family due to security concerns.
The local administration of the Taliban has not commented yet in connection to the incident.
Attacks against women and girls at home have been increasing, but there are no longer any official records of the incidents. Domestic violence especially against women has increased in Afghanistan following extensive restrictions on women’s autonomy by Taliban decree and the shuttering of institutions and groups that supported women.
The Taliban dissolved institutions from the previous government in support of human rights work, including the Independent Human Rights Commission and the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, and instead formed the Ministry of Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice that only enforces Taliban oppression of women.
There are also many reports of women trying to leave or divorce their abusers who have faced even more harassment and abuse in the courts from Taliban judges and authorities.
