A three-day summit will be held in Tirana, Albania from September 11-13 focusing on the future of Afghanistan and the status of Afghan women.
The event, organized by the Women’s Organization for Afghanistan with support from Switzerland and Spain, will bring together approximately 130 to 140 women from diverse political, social, economic, and media backgrounds, representing all ethnic groups in Afghanistan.
Former member of Afghanistan’s lower house and one of the summit’s organizers Fawzia Koofi confirmed that preparations are in full swing and that guests are already arriving.
The summit will cover a range of critical topics including the political roadmap for Afghan women, the future government of Afghanistan, and broader issues related to the status of women and girls in the country.
Attendees will include foreign ministers from various countries and the U.S. Special Representative for Afghan Women and Human Rights Rina Amira.
The summit takes place against a backdrop of severe repression and significant changes in Afghanistan, particularly since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021. Under Taliban rule, Afghan women have faced severe restrictions on their rights and freedoms, including barriers to education, employment, and participation in social and political spheres.
Despite international concern and efforts to support Afghan women, tangible improvements have been elusive.
The summit aims to address these challenges and explore pathways for progress.
