Two people have been publicly whipped and jailed in northern Badakhshan province’s Khash district as punishment for “running away from home”, according to a Taliban Supreme Court newsletter released Wednesday.
The newsletter did not provide the gender or age of the people. However, the Taliban’s de facto government has imposed strict laws that only apply to the movement of Afghan girls and women.
The newsletter said that the punishments for “running away from home” were handed down after the local court heard the pair’s cases.
In addition to being flogged, they were sentenced to prison, the newsletter said, but it did not say for how long.
The flogging was conducted in the presence of local Taliban officials and residents of the district, according to the newsletter.
The Taliban has instituted harsh corporal punishments through its court system, with men, women and young people publicly flogged on various minor charges across the country.
