Two male teachers in Sang-e-Takht district of Daikundi province have been punished with beatings by Taliban forces for teaching girls, according to at least two reliable sources.
Daikundi district governor Mohammad Wali Sadiq went to the New Horizon educational center with five armed men on Saturday September 16 and beat one of the teachers, the sources who spoke on condition of anonymity said.
The center is popularly known as JRS as it is under the supervision of the Jesuit Refugee Service.
The two men are said to have been teaching computer studies and English language to girls above grade six during classes for younger students.
According to one of the sources, the Taliban had previously warned the educational center against teaching students older than grade six.
After being viciously beaten, the Taliban imprisoned the two teachers. They were released on guarantees after some hours of mediation from local elders.
The Taliban have barred girls from attending school after grade six since they came to power in August 2021. They claimed at the time that they needed to make proper preparations for girls schools. Since then the Taliban has also banned girls and women from university.
