The Taliban have reaffirmed their ban on women working in non-governmental organizations by issuing a follow-up letter, warning compliance with a directive first introduced in December 2022, according to the Taliban’s Ministry of Economy.
The letter dated December 26 mandates that all local and international NGOs cease hiring women and take immediate steps to implement the ban.
The ministry warned that any failure to adhere to the directive would result in the suspension of the organization’s operations and the revocation of its license.
Since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, they have imposed restrictions on women and girls, including prohibiting them from secondary and higher education, barring them from working in NGOs, and restricting their freedom of movement without a male guardian.
In their latest action, the group has closed all public and private health institutes for women across the country until “further notice.”
