The Taliban have started a search operation in the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif in the early morning of Thursday, August 25.
Mohammad Asif Waziri, the Taliban spokesman for Balkh police, said the house-to-house search campaign will continue between a week and ten days.
Waziri said the operation was planned in response to the complaints of Mazar-e-Sharif residents who expressed concern over possession of illegal weapons by criminals. He added the goal is to identify those who commit illegal activities such as kidnapping.
Mazar-e-Sharif is the largest city in north Afghanistan with a population of around one million. The city’s residents criticized the Taliban’s search operation, saying it has caused panic among the locals.
“We are all dissatisfied about the mistreatment of those who are searching” the houses, said a resident who spoke on the condition of anonymity, “The presence of the Taliban fighters in crowded civilian places weakens the morale of people.”
