A 17-year-old girl committed suicide by hanging herself to death in Dare Abdullah Khel district of Panjshir province on Sunday, December 11, local sources report.
The victim is identified as Shaima, a resident Kansar village in the district.
Meanwhile, Lotfullah Malekzada, head of Information and Culture of the Taliban in Panjshir, confirmed the incident and said that it was being treated as a mental illness.
Mr. Malekzada added that the victim had made suicide attempts in the past, however, her relatives had saved her.
After the Taliban seized power in mid-August 2021, it dissolved the institutions defending women’s rights and fighting violence against women, including the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and the Independent Human Rights Commission. It also fired women advocates, prosecutors, and judges in the court system.
