A man has killed his mother in the early hours of Thursday morning by stabbing her and setting her on fire in Shaberghan, the capital of Jawzjan province, local officials say.
Abdul Sattar Halimi, the Taliban’s police spokesman in Jawzjan told media on Friday that the incident happened around 3:00 am Thursday.
Mr Halimi said the victim’s name was Bibi Ayesha, who was 42 years old. Her son, identified as Omidullah, 20, has been arrested and taken into custody. He did not provide any further details.
In Sarpul province, two women were killed on Wednesday when a man attacked his fiancée and his fiancée’s mother with a knife in Sangcharak district. He first killed his fiancée and then turned on her mother allegedly on suspicion that his fiancée was having a relationship with another man.
There has been an increasing number of reports of domestic violence which some blame on the rise of poverty and increasing unemployment, as well as the restrictions of the Taliban towards women giving men more licence to treat women poorly.
