Two women have allegedly killed themselves and another two women are in hospital after consuming rat poison in separate incidents in Bamyan province.
Mohammad Khawani Rasa, spokesman of the Taliban’s police unit in Bamyan, told Rukhshana Media on Sunday that two women had allegedly killed themselves using poison in the Saighan and Yakawlang districts of Bamyan.
According to Rasa, a full investigation into both incidents and the motivation for the suicides is underway.
A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Rukhshana Media that two young girls had attempted suicide by consuming rat poison on Monday. They are currently being treated in Bamyan provincial hospital and are in a stable condition.
The source did not provide details about their identities or locations at the time of the attempt.
The number of reported murders and suicides of women and girls has been increasing in some provinces of the country, although no official statistics are available. Many of the reports are mysterious or remain unresolved as to the cause of the death.
The restrictions imposed by the Taliban against women and girls and domestic violence against them are widely regarded as major factors.
