The Taliban forces have publicly whipped 35 people, including eight women, in Jawzjan, Takhar, Nangarhar, Ghazni and Kunar provinces over the past week, the Taliban Supreme Court said in separate statements.
The individuals received between 10 to 39 lashes and were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 15 days to three years on various charges, including sodomy, adultery, theft, running away from home, and drug-related activities such as production, buying and selling, smuggling drugs and alcoholic beverages, the statements said.
The Taliban’s corporal punishments have been widely criticized by human rights organizations as a violation of basic human rights. However, the Taliban claim that they are implementing Islamic Sharia law.
