Editorial Assistant

Rukhshana Media is looking for an Editorial Assistant to support the team, Editor-in-Chief and Board of Trustees. The ideal candidate will speak and write English and Farsi, can be based remotely but with permission to work where they are based, and be flexible to work the equivalent of four days over a week. The position reports to the Editor-in-Chief of Rukhshana Media, Zahra Joya.

About Rukhshana Media

Rukhshana Media, established in 2020, is an online news agency and UK charity focused on covering issues that affect women and girls in Afghanistan. Zahra Joya is the Editor-in-Chief of Rukhshana Media, leading a team of reporters within Afghanistan reporting on what life is like for women and girls living under Taliban rule. The platform publishes in English, Farsi and Pashto and has a wide reach within Afghanistan and globally via its website and social media channels. It is in the process of developing a newsletter.

About the Role

We are looking for a hardworking and motivated editorial assistant to directly support Rukhshana Media’s editorial team. This role is primarily an administrative position with potential for developing journalistic and editorial skills. If you are an editorial assistant or early career journalist with excellent language and organisational skills looking to take on more responsibility and move to the next stage of your career, this position could be right for you.

Responsibilities

  1. Database and Archive Management
    – Organise, catalogue and maintain the organisation’s databases and archives
    – Create a clear and searchable system for images and other assets (photos, videos …)
    – Ensure editorial materials are easy for the team to access and use
    – Ensure rights are cleared and relevant records kept
  2. Editorial and Content Support
    – Suggest, source and manage images for the newsletter and other editorial outputs
    – Support the editorial team with research and content preparation where appropriate
    – Develop journalistic skills through close collaboration with editors
  3. Newsletter Support
    – Assist with the preparation and production of the newsletter
    – Maintain the database of users in line with UK GDPR legislation
    – Propose suitable visuals and ensure consistency and quality
    – Maintain an archive of published newsletters
  4. Social Media
    – Review current responsibility for social media management
    – Potentially take on social media tasks, including:
    – Posting content
    – Coordinating with the editorial team
    – Maintaining tone, accuracy and language quality across platforms
    – Monitoring audience responses
  5. Data, Analytics and Reporting
    – Collect and maintain key performance data, including:
    – Clicks and engagement
    – Number of stories published
    – Newsletter and social media performance
    – Ensure the team always has up-to-date statistics
    – Produce regular performance summaries as required
  6. Internal Coordination and Logging
    – Liaise with the editorial team to understand what each member is working on
    – Keep a clear log of ongoing work, projects and outputs
    – Support transparency and efficient workflow within the team
  7. Administrative Support
    – Provide general administrative support to the editorial team and Board
    – Assist with organisational tasks that support the team
    – Contribute to improving internal processes and systems
    – Keep an updated fundraising tracker for the board of Rukshana Media

Skills and Requirements

  • Excellent written and spoken language skills (Farsi and English)
  • Strong administrator and highly organised
  • Strong communication abilities
  • High level of digital literacy and confidence using online tools
  • Well-organised, detail-oriented and proactive
  • Knowledge of how to collect audience data
  • Working knowledge of MS Office, Adobe InDesign, and content management systems (such as WordPress).
  • Knowledge of working with a CRM would be desirable.

Terms and Benefits:

  • Fixed-term contract ending January 21st, 2027, working the equivalent of four days flexible over a week.
  • One month trial period.
  • Salary: £23,000 for a four-day week, working flexible over a week.
  • 20 days annual leave (plus public holidays)
  • The position is remote but reports into a team based in the UK and will need to observe relevant hours.
  • Candidates must have permission to work in their country of residence and be able to demonstrate this
