A 19-year-old girl has allegedly taken her own life by shooting herself in Shaigal district of Kunar province, a Taliban local official said.
Kunar police spokesperson Farid Dehaqan said that the teenager used a Kalashnikov to shoot herself on Tuesday morning in the Ato area of the district.
The motive for her ending her life remains unclear, he said.
A local resident, who knows the family and preferred not to be named, told Rukhshana Media that the teen’s family had planned to marry her off against her will.
Mr Dehaqan said that Taliban authorities have started an investigation into the matter.
Since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan and implemented numerous restrictions on girls’ and women’s freedom, reports of suicide have increased across the country.
