The Taliban’s acting justice minister announced on Monday, September 27, that the group will rule according to the constitution of 1964, a monarchy constitution that granted women the right to vote and run for office. However, the group added that they will adopt the constitution with some amendments to make sure if it is not at odd with Sharia law.
Mawlavi Abdul Hakim Sharee, the Taliban’s acting justice minister announced the temporary adoption of King Zahir Shah’s constitution (1964-1973) in a meeting with the Chinese ambassador Wang Yu in Kabul, according to a statement released by the Taliban’s ministry of justice.
The acting minister of justice added that the Taliban will respect those international laws and documents that do not contradict Islamic law, indicating the Taliban’s unwillingness to accept international laws that demand respect for women’s and minority rights.
According to a statement, Wang Yu, the Chinese ambassador has assured the Taliban that China will maintain diplomatic relations with Afghanistan and will work to lift the international sanctions on the Taliban.
The constitution of 1964 which was also adopted during the transition period of Hamid Karzai, granted all Afghan citizens equal rights and emphasizes “freedom” as natural rights that the government is “obligated to respect and protect.”
