A group of women in Kabul protested the Taliban’s closure of the school for girls and female teachers on Thursday, September 30.
The protesters, mostly students and school teachers, gathered near Rabia Balkhi High School and Soria High School in the Kart-e-Char area of Kabul, demanding the immediate reopening of school for girls and teachers.
One of the protesters told Rukhshana Media that the Taliban responded violently and dispersed protesters by firing in the air and by snatching protesters’ phones and breaking them.
Since the Taliban returned to power and banned women’s work and education, women have staged several protests in several provinces, asking for protection of their rights. However, the Taliban responded violently by beating protesters and arresting and torturing journalists for covering the protests they deem “illegal.”
Although the Taliban claim their ban on women’s education and work is a temporary measure, Afghan women say the Taliban used the same argument 25 years ago, when they ruled Afghanistan for the first time.
The Taliban have not commented officially on today’s protest.
