A teenage girl has allegedly died by hanging herself in northern Faryab province after her father accepted a marriage offer on her behalf, local sources in the province say.
The 17-year-old died Wednesday in the Saldoz Tepa area of Faryab’s Andkhoy district, according to a relative, who wished to remain anonymous.
They said that the teenager’s father accepted a marriage proposal for his daughter from the son of one his friend’s friends without her consent.
The girl put up a strong opposition, but her father insisted, the source said.
The teenager is understood to have died at home the same day of the marriage proposal.
It is a common cultural practice in Afghanistan for parents, especially fathers, to decide on marriage partners for their children.
