Dozens of people, including women and children, were infected by cholera on Tuesday, May 17, in Shajoy district of southern Zabul province, a local health official said.
Sayed Mubarak, the head of a clinic in Shahjoy, said one person was infected by cholera after drinking unclean water on Tuesday morning, then the disease began spreading among the residents of the area.
Abdul Hakim Hakimi, director of Zabul Public Health Department, said 120 were infected by an “unknown” disease with symptoms such as sore throat, vomiting and diarrhea.
He said 10 patients, who were in critical condition, were transferred to Qalat, the capital city of Zabul province, for medical treatment. Medical teams were dispatched to the area to set up tents and treat over 100 patients.
Mubarak, the head of the clinic said, the youngest patient was 1-year-old, and that most infected patients at his clinic fainted after they fell ill.
