An 18-year-old girl took her own life after jumping into a river in Dawlatyar district of Ghor province, according to three local sources.
The incident occurred Tuesday in the Takham area of Dawlatyar district.
The teenager had recently married her neighbor’s son about a month ago but was facing family disputes with her husband’s family, according to the sources.
The sources said that she jumped from a bridge into Harrirod river.
“Her husband’s family had to pay her father 60,000 Afghanis ($850) unpaid from the dowry, occasionally asked by her father,” the sources said.
“Her in-law’s family pressured her to convince her father to forgive the debt. After enduring immense pressure, she jumped into the river, ending her life.”
Local Taliban authorities have not yet commented on the incident.
Allegedly women and girls across the country have resorted to suicide for various reasons, including restrictions imposed by the Taliban over the past two and half years.
