In Afghanistan, four women committed suicide in 24 hours

Sources said that four women committed suicide in different parts of Afghanistan in the past 24 hours.

One killed herself by eating rat poison in the evening of Sunday, July 3, in Kalafgan district of northeastern Takhar province, a local source said. He said the woman committed suicide after she had an argument with her in-law’s family over the expanses of her wedding party which was planned to be held in a few days. 

Another young woman committed suicide after she was badly beaten by her brother who opposed her marrying a man she loved. The incident happened in Dehrawood district of southern Uruzgan province, and the victim was a 18-year-old woman, a local source said. She ended her life by eating a large amount of opium on Sunday. 

Sources from Takhar and Uruzgan spoke on the condition that we don’t publish their names for security reasons.

The third victim, who shot herself dead by a hunting gun, was a newlywed woman in central Daikundi province. The woman was identified as 17-year-old Sakina, and the incident happened in Kiti district on Sunday evening. 

Police were dispatched to the scene and investigation was underway, said  Gholam Ali Jawid, the Taliban spokesperson of Daikundi police. He said no one was arrested in connection to the killing so far.

The fourth woman committed suicide by hanging herself on Monday, July 4, in the ninth district of Herat city, said Mohmood Shah Rasuli, the Taliban’s spokesperson for Herat police chief. He said the victim’s husband was detained in connection to the incident.

Suicide cases have increased among women since the Taliban’s return to power nearly a year ago.
